The Importance of Self-Care and How to Improve It

Sarah Hill MS LPC

Some days are so difficult. You are thinking to yourself I. AM. SO. TIRED. I don’t have time to do anything for myself today. You manage to drag yourself out of bed, get that kiddo(s) ready, and you are shuffling everyone out the door and making it to work just in time to clock in without being late. Chug that coffee, drink that energy drink, and then watch the clock. ALL. DAY. LONG. I can’t wait for 5 o’clock you are telling yourself. Then on your way home you are making a mental checklist of everything you still have to get done for the day. Dinner. Homework for kiddo. Bath and bedtime routine. By the time you hit that 8:30 pm mark you are done for. Am I right? Does this resonate with you at all?

Here’s the thing. There are going to be things in our life that we are responsible for, but also taking care of ourselves is VITAL to being a healthier individual.

Here are 3 tips for improving self-care:

 1. Learn to say no to things that you don’t absolutely have to do. Have a mental check-in with yourself each time, and ask yourself, “Is this really something I want to invest my time and energy into?”

 2. Learn to delegate what can be delegated.

 3. Make a plan to ensure that you get enough sleep.

I hope this article helps, and remember, YOU are a priority, and creating intentional habits is the key to a peaceful life.
